The Pittsburgh broadcasting community, regular morning commuters, and countless radio listeners across western Pennsylvania are mourning the loss of a true radio icon. Greg McAtee, the longtime, definitive traffic anchor and reporter for Audacy-Pittsburgh (KDKA-AM/FM, Y108, STAR 100.7, and Sportsradio 93-7 The Fan), passed away peacefully on Friday, June 19, 2026. His passing follows a courageous, deeply dignified five-year battle with cancer.
Known throughout the region for his unmistakably rich baritone, unwavering professionalism, and vibrant personality, Greg was affectionately referred to by colleagues as possessing “the Voice of God” and “fantastic pipes.” For nearly a decade, his voice was the calming, guiding constant during chaotic Pittsburgh rush hours. Beyond his incredible broadcast talent, Greg was celebrated as an exceptional family man, a devoted father, and a warm, deeply faith-driven individual who brought joy to everyone he encountered.
The Courageous Journey and Ultimate Rest of a Great Man
Fighting the Good Fight
Greg’s final five years were marked by an incredible exhibition of resilience. Diagnosed with cancer over half a decade ago, he continued to step up to the microphone, delivering vital traffic updates to his massive fan base while quietly enduring grueling medical treatments. A statement shared by his devoted daughters revealed that Greg had undergone “intense chemotherapy” for the past two years to combat the progression of the disease.
Despite the physical toll of his illness, Greg never allowed his on-air energy to falter. His passing brings an end to his pain, a transition beautifully encapsulated by his cousin, Dan McAtee, who shared a touching tribute set to Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High On That Mountain”:
“Many knew you as the voice on the radio, many never saw your face but I can promise you they knew a great man just by hearing your sweet voice giving everyone an update on the traffic. I’m not sad you left us at such a young age, I’m happy you are healthy and pain-free again. You went to God for a reason. You and dad are hanging out making more memories… keep watch over not only your huge family but all of your friends and your massive traffic fan base.”
Academic Foundations and a Lifetime on the Airwaves
Greg’s legendary career with the microphone began with a deep foundational education in western Pennsylvania. He attended Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania from 1975 to 1979, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a Mass Media Concentration.
While at “The Rock,” Greg was an indispensable asset to the campus radio scene, anchoring broadcasts on WNFT Radio. His collegiate years were characterized by a rich blend of media production and vocal performance; he was a proud member of the Kappa Gamma Communicative Arts Honorary, sang in the Chancel Choir, and found community within the Slippery Rock Christian Fellowship and the Solid Rock Coffeehouse.
Following college, Greg’s profound faith led him to the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) organization, where he graduated from the Discipleship Training School and School of Evangelism between 1984 and 1985. These intense, multi-month missionary training tracks instilled in him a lifetime commitment to servant leadership, empathy, and community care that defined his interactions in commercial boardrooms for the next forty years.
A Multifaceted Media Career and the Sounds of Pittsburgh
Greg was an extraordinarily versatile media entrepreneur. In January 1988, he founded Deejay Greg McAtee, a highly successful mobile entertainment company that provided music, voice work, and emcee services for hundreds of weddings, parties, and corporate events across the greater Pittsburgh area for over 38 years.
In July 2011, he launched his freelance voiceover business, deploying his elite vocal range to produce and voice short and long-form commercial broadcasting packages globally. Prior to commanding the traffic desk, Greg served as the Assistant Production Director for Sheridan Broadcasting Corporation from October 2014 to March 2017, where he edited, produced, and distributed complex urban radio programming for the American Urban Radio Network (AURN).
Becoming the Voice of the Commute
In March 2017, Greg joined CBS Radio (which later transitioned to Entercom and ultimately Audacy), taking on the massive responsibility of Traffic Anchor and Reporter for the Greater Pittsburgh Region.
Greg effectively managed the daily traffic grids for multiple powerhouse FM and AM stations simultaneously. He served as the primary traffic voice for Y108 (WDSY), STAR 100.7 (WBZZ), and Sportsradio 93-7 The Fan (KDKA-FM), while frequently stepping in to provide crucial navigation coverage for the legendary KDKA Newsradio 1020 (KDKA-AM) and AAA networks. His unmatched ability to look at a screen full of accidents, closures, and construction delays, synthesize it instantly, and deliver it with reassuring warmth made him a beloved, foundational part of Pittsburgh’s daily routine.
Colleagues and Regional Executives Pay Tribute
The news of Greg’s passing on June 19 triggered an immediate wave of mourning across the regional media landscape. His co-workers at Audacy consistently emphasized that Greg’s dedication to his listeners never wavered, even during the darkest days of his oncology battles.
Colin Dunlap, KDKA afternoon host, expressed the deep corporate and personal heartbreak felt throughout the station:
“We lost a great colleague today. RIP Greg McAtee. Man, did he ever care about doing a great job. Always. Greg was a great man and a fantastic father. His daughter posted this… it speaks to how wonderful of a family man he was. Have a thought for him – and his family.”
Audacy Regional Vice President Michael Spacciapolli echoed these sentiments, releasing an official corporate statement honoring Greg’s work ethic and character, calling him:
“An absolute professional in every sense of the word.”
Eternal Legacy and Family Continuity
Greg’s personal life was a beautiful narrative of longevity and love. On March 3, 1984, he married the absolute love of his life, Robin Rosander McAtee. Together, they celebrated 42 years of marriage, building a strong family anchored by their daughters, extensive extended relatives including cousins Dan McAtee, Joe Brown, and family member Nancy Fearon, and a network of neighbors who knew him simply as an exceptionally kind man who loved his family fiercely.

Broadcast Memorials: While official public funeral arrangements remain pending, Audacy-Pittsburgh and KDKA Radio are currently organizing specialized on-air audio tributes to honor Greg’s 9-year tenure at the traffic desk, allowing listeners to hear his iconic voice one final time.
-
Family Space: The McAtee family has requested privacy as his daughters and wife process the immense loss of their patriarch, thanking the City of Pittsburgh for the massive outpouring of love and condolences.
Greg McAtee spent his life ensuring that the people of Pittsburgh could find their way home safely through the worst of traffic and storms. While his microphone has gone silent and his final broadcast has concluded, his glorious voice, his professional standard, and his gentle spirit will echo through the hills and tunnels of the city he loved forever. May he rest in eternal, pain-free peace.
